Andrea was born in Carroll, Iowa and also lived in Norfolk, Nebraska and Cedar Rapids, Iowa while she was growing up. Once, on a trip to London, she went on a blind date where she met her husband Jason, who also happened to be from Iowa! They have been married for 15 years now and live in Cedar Rapids with their three children, Inga, Elsa, and Thomas, their black cat named Esmeralda, and their Welsh Terrier named Sadie. Andrea is a first grade teacher at Nixon Elementary School in Hiawatha.
Andrea has been a camper, volunteer, and summer staff member at Camp Wyoming. Now, all three of her children attend summer camp here. She says, “I love the natural environment of camp that is welcoming to all. As a kid, I loved the chance to get away from my parents for a week, but as a parent, I now love that I get little glimpses of what my children are doing each day while they are gone. I get so excited to talk with them on the drive home about their new friends and experiences!”
Although she doesn’t have a lot of free time, Andrea does enjoy reading when she has the chance and traveling with her family. She spends a lot of time volunteering at her kids’ school, driving to and from their activities, and cheering them on at dance competitions, recitals, and wrestling meets. Typically, she and her husband have a weekly date night on the couch where they watch “The Walking Dead” together after the kids are in bed. However, her husband serves in the Air National Guard and is currently deployed, so those date nights now happen over the phone instead. Andrea says, “My life truly revolves around my family and I wouldn’t have it any other way. They bring me joy every day!”
The choice to serve on the Camp Wyoming board was an easy one for Andrea. She truly cares about the future of the camp, especially now that her children go every summer and love it so much. She wants to help create a place that they can continue to enjoy as they grow.
Andrea’s favorite Bible verse is Jeremiah 29:11 – “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’”
