Rev. John Hougen
John is the pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Independence, Iowa. He has lived in Independence with his family for fourteen years now. His wife works as a nurse at the local hospital, and they have four kids: two of whom are working and in school, and two of whom are working and living in the Twin Cities. John and his wife also have 2 cats and Corgi.
John graduated from Bethel College in St. Paul, Minnesota with a degree in business. He later got his Masters of Divinity from Bethel Seminary. When speaking of the things in life that he is passionate about, John says, “I love being with people – on the golf course, around a table, traveling – you name it. On life’s journey it’s all about who you get to travel with and God has blessed me with some wonderful traveling companions.”
When asked why he accepted the invitation to be on the camp board, John couldn’t just give one reason. “I believe Camp Wyoming is a wonderful resource for our Presbytery. It is a wonderful place for summer camp for our kids, but it so much more than that. I have utilized the Camp for leadership retreats, clergy retreats, and even personal retreats. It provides churches with a wonderful opportunity to grow their leadership and young people.”
