Mike Saskowski

Mike lives in Davenport, Iowa. He was born in the city and has lived there most of his life.  He and his wife of 21 years, Amy, were introduced on a blind date in the spring of 1993 set up by some close friends.  They did not really hit it off.  They met again at Iowa State in the fall and the rest is history.  They have four children – Emma, Abby, Justin, and Meg. They have the coolest Catahoula dog named Buliwyf, and their kids convinced them they needed guinea pigs this past Christmas.  “I have been given many blessings in my life, but my family by far is the biggest one of all.”  The family are members of Davenport First Presbyterian Church.

Mike enlisted in the Navy right out of high school and served for 6 years with his last rotation being in Desert Storm/Desert Shield. He graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He works for John Deere as a Manufacturing Engineer Supervisor. For free time, Mike likes to work around the house.  “I find it challenging to fix things, and people are really good at breaking things. Maybe that’s why I like my job so much.” He also plays in a volleyball league.

Although Mike had no camp experience as a child or adult, he has watched his kids grow up going to camp and return with smiling faces.  “My wife was a board member for several years, and my kids love their experience so much that I wanted to be part of planning the long term strategy to grow Camp Wyoming for many years to come.”

Psalm 23rd is his favorite Bible passage.  His bunk mate in boot camp had it memorized and would say it just after lights out so a few of the guys around him could hear it.  “I always thought it was so cool.”

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
    He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
    he restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths
    for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
    I fear no evil;
for you are with me;
    your rod and your staff—
    they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
    in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
    all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
    my whole life long.
