Summer camp is a rite of passage growing up. It’s where kids go to experience nature, make friends, and have crazy adventures. At Camp Wyoming, it’s also a place where they come to grow in faith and in their relationship with God. There is no typical day at summer camp. You might find yourself sliding down a mud slide, launching a rocket, paddling a corcl, dancing around a campfire, or crawling through a cave. We aspire to create a place of sanctuary, of beauty, of fun, and of adventure for our campers, retreat guests, and everyone in between!

Who We Are

We are looking to hire a Program Director to join our year-round staff. Camp Wyoming is a Christian summer camp and retreat center in Jones County, Iowa. We run overnight summer camp programs for all school-age kids as well as retreats and rentals for groups the rest of the year. Our site sits on 380 acres of forest. Bear Creek wanders through the property and campers enjoy boating on Frog Pond. The bluffs, caves, woods, and trails provide a natural and beautiful setting for people to escape the busyness of life to experience a time away. We have cabins and a retreat center, and we will be installing and opening a brand-new high ropes course and climbing tower this year!

Program Director Qualifications

  1. Has a personal and joyful commitment to God through Jesus Christ and is dedicated to Christ’s Church.
  2. Has a desire to teach and communicate reformed theology as well as the traditions of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
  3. A Bachelor’s degree in camping, religion, recreation, education, marketing, or related field.
  4. Has knowledge, training, and/or experience in all aspects of camp ministry programming including: Staff recruitment, hiring, and training; Overseeing the development of curriculum in Christian Education; Developing and delivering outdoor programs and education; Conflict management and problem solving
  5. Preferred experience of 3 or more years in organized camp environment
  6. Possesses strong listening and communication skills.
  7. Positive driving record.
  8. Certification in First Aid and CPR preferred
  9. Certification in Lifeguarding preferred.

Overall Responsibilities

  1. Prepare, oversee, and supervise summer camp and retreat programs.
  2. Work cooperatively with year-round staff to ensure cohesive operation of camp.
  3. Create within the camp an atmosphere of Christian community which will promote spiritual, physical, intellectual, and social growth among its members.
  4. Be familiar with and ensure staff abide by the American Camp Association (ACA) Standards.
  5. Operate within approved budget.

Specific Responsibilities

  1. Implement and develop curriculum for summer camp program and year-round retreats.
  2. Lead registration and check-out of camp programs.
  3. Prepare resource materials for summer staff.
  4. Recruit, hire, train, supervise, build, and evaluate summer staff.
  5. Oversee Counselors-in-Training (C.I.T.) program.
  6. Lead and supervise High Ropes Course/Climbing Tower program.
  7. Purchase and maintain inventory of all program-related supplies.
  8. Host retreat groups.
  9. Promote camp programs to churches and other organizations.
  10. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Hiring Process and Timeline

All applicants should submit a cover letter and resume, along with three references, to Stacie Hoppman, Camp Director, at stacie@campwyoming.net no later than September 4, 2022.

Video interviews with selected applicants will take place September 12-16, 2022.

On-Site interviews with second-round applicants will take place September 26-30, 2022.

The selected applicant will start in October or November of 2022.

Salary and Compensation

Benefits package includes a $35,000 salary, health insurance, pension, two weeks of paid vacation, professional development, and on-site housing during the summer.
